Investigations
With over three decades of federal court experience, I provide trusted counsel to clients facing the most serious and complex investigations. Whether initiated by a grand jury, a corporate board, a regulatory agency, or a state attorney general, these inquiries demand seasoned judgment, strategic foresight, and a steady hand. My practice is built on guiding clients through these high-stakes processes, protecting their rights, and working toward favorable outcomes before charges are ever filed.
Grand Jury Investigations
Grand jury investigations are inquiries to determine whether probable cause exists to formally charge an individual with a federal or state felony. These proceedings are conducted in secret, with prosecutors presenting documents and witness testimony to a panel of citizens who then vote on whether to return an indictment. Witnesses must testify if subpoenaed, but they are not permitted to have their lawyer present inside the grand jury room. This makes experienced legal guidance absolutely critical.
Responding effectively to a grand jury investigation involves far more than simply producing documents or witnesses. I work closely with clients to:
Develop a strategic approach to collecting and producing subpoenaed materials;
Analyze the government’s evidence to anticipate the prosecution’s case;
Craft defense theories early in the investigation;
Manage communications with other possible subjects or targets;
File motions to challenge overreaching by prosecutors and minimize disruption;
Safeguard privileges protecting sensitive information; and
Negotiate directly with prosecutors on issues such as testimony, immunity, and proffers.
Corporate Investigations
Corporate internal and external investigations often arise from suspected misconduct, fraud, compliance breaches, or reputational threats. These inquiries may involve gathering and analyzing documents, interviewing witnesses, and evaluating practices to ensure compliance with law and internal policies. I assist boards, executives, and in-house counsel in conducting investigations that protect financial integrity, strengthen compliance, and position the company to respond effectively if regulators or law enforcement become involved. My role is to ensure that companies uncover the facts, address risks, and preserve credibility while avoiding unnecessary exposure.
Regulatory & State Attorneys General Investigations
I also represent clients in regulatory investigations brought by federal agencies and state attorneys general. These matters may involve a single jurisdiction or coordinated, multi-state actions, and frequently overlap with Department of Justice inquiries. They cover virtually every aspect of government oversight facing businesses today — from consumer protection and financial practices to corporate governance and compliance. I provide experienced representation to protect clients from overreach, negotiate workable solutions, and, when necessary, litigate aggressively to defend their interests.
